Wyler
Robust Wireless Solves Cable
Break Issues
"connectBlue made the new application possible without extensive development costs."
Alois Schönbächler, Senior Development Engineer, Wyler AG
Founded in 1928, Swiss-based Wyler AG provides inclination measurement products ranging from sensors to complex electronic measuring systems. Wyler chose to go wireless when a customer experienced frequent cable breaks as the sensor connection cables were run over by monitoring carriages. The cable issues lead to inconvenient failures and expensive cable replacements. The requirements of the Bluetooth solution were the following:
- Distance up to 40 meters
- Multidrop connections between devices
- Disturbance-free connection during simultaneous handling of various measuring systems
The first products with the connectBlue Bluetooth modules hit the market in 2005. “We chose connectBlue, since it was the only provider of stand-alone solutions with all the Bluetooth communication layers,” comments Martin Gassner, Dr. sc. nat., Head of R&D at Wyler. “Also, connectBlue was the only supplier of multidrop systems.”
Wireless Offers Precise Inclination Measuring
The connectBlue products are found in Wyler’s inclination measuring devices. “Usually where geometry is measured and adjusted is not in line-of-sight,” explains Gassner. “Thanks to Bluetooth communication in our BlueSYSTEM instruments, the technician can adjust the inclination instantly and thereby remarkably speed up, for instance, the machine tool setup.”The BlueSYSTEM products are adapted to the metrology specialist’s needs when handling machine tool components. There is a broad application range such as flatness-measurement on a circular support of a turn-table (see left image).
Seamless Upgrade
When the BlueSYSTEM solution was developed, “connectBlue made the new application possible without extensive development costs,” comments Alois Schönbächler, Senior Development Engineer at Wyler. He fills in that Wyler not only had a smooth start with connectBlue, but that the years that have followed have shown that connectBlue can offer new product generation upgrades seamlessly.
“The modules are very reliable and perform flawlessly during production and/or service,” concludes Gassner. “Replacements of existing Bluetooth modules are made easily since the new modules are compatible with former versions. So, we can enjoy the latest in technology with only minor changes needed - if any at all.”
Key Benefits
